Interesting autograph letter signed in Italian, dated 1 Giugno 1901 by the English philosopher, co-founder with Russell, Wittgenstein and Frege of the analytical philosophy movement. Moore addresses a gentleman, concerning some studies by Karl Witte (1800-1883) about the identity of the author of the “Comento Anonimo”, an early commentary on Dante’s Inferno, who remained anonymous, attributed to Graziolo Bambaglioli (1291-1342): “…Acchiudo un estratto della lettera del Prof. Carl Witte intorno alla scoperta dell’identità del cosidetto Comento Anonimo e quello del Bambaglioli. Mi rincresce di non aver una copia duplicata dell’Academy. Di quello avevo pubblicato estratti del Codice di Lord Vermon contenente il frammento del Comento del Bambaglioli, confrontati coi luoghi paralleli del ‘Comento Anonimo”. Avevo anche veduto alla sfuggita il Codice originale Bembaglioliano nella Bibl. Colombina di Siviglia…” Translation: “I enclose an extract of the letter by Prof. Carl Witte regarding the discover of the identity of the so called Comento Anonimo and that of Bambaglioli. Unfortunately I do not had a duplicate copy of the Academy. I had published extracts of the Code by Lord Vermon containing the fragment of Bambaglioli’s Comento, compared with parallel sections of the ‘Comento Anonimo’.
